Recently, 3DVIA Composer team has released a new 3DVIA Composer - V6R2013x Certification Examcertification exam that has been updated to V6R2013x.  This certification focuses on 3DVIA Composer and offers customers, partners, DS employees, and students the opportunity to achieve accreditation in this area.  To be properly prepared it is recommended that test takers have at least 3-months of work experience using 3DVIA Composer.  Prior to taking the certification exam it is also recommended that test takers complete 20 hours of Companion training that is offered through the following link; 3DVIA Composer Essentials Companion.   This exam consists of approximately 50-70 questions that range in difficulty and all are multiple choice questions.  The certification exam is delivered in a secure proctored testing environment at any Pearson VUE site.  The length of the entire exam is 60 minutes in length however an additional 15-minutes is granted for those that don’t speak English as a native language.  To achieve success on the 3DVIA Composer (V6R2013x) certification exam a minimum score of 70% is required.  The topics on the exam are randomly assigned but can include questions in the following areas, including File Properties, Display, User Interface, Author Properties, Animation, Geometry, Transformation, Composer Player, and Terminology.  It is important to note that the exam is currently only offered in English.

It should also be noted that the previous certification exam was especially difficult and did have very low pass rate.  Using the feedback that was given the 3DVIA team improved the entire exam and formatted the questions to be much more concise.  Additionally, throughout the whole test more emphasis was also placed on how 3DVIA is used in “everyday” practice and much less on specific functions often not used.  If you are interested in taking this new certification exam please visit http://www.3ds.com/education  to find out more information.

Recently a customer told me he wanted to be able to turn off all selection and highlighting including the red bounding box but still see only specific objects  clearly .so I showed him how to do it.  I thought to myself, this would be a handy little tip for a TodCast so here it is.

Recently I got a question of how to specify a specific angle on a polyline and get accurate measurements of angles. Here are a couple of tips and suggestions to do that. Also, of you have not checked out Tim’s Podcast of detail view of a detail view, check it out. It’s a very powerful way to get just what you need. http://www.3dmojo.com/2013/08/23/detail-view-of-a-detail-view/

I literally just got off a web-ex with a customer that wanted to mirror a procedure to make let’s say a left hand/right version. I never did one of these before and thought I’d try it. When I figured out how easy it was I just had to share it with you guys.

Copy Keys

For most of you this is a refresher on one of the capabilities within 3DVIA Composer Authoring. When animating repetitive tasks it is helpful to utilize the “Copy Selected Tracks of the Selected Actors” from the context menu in the timeline. In this example I am applying a rotation to a single bolt and then copying those tracks to the rest of the bolts in the assembly. Here is the link to the video describing this fundamental process.

The Inagural 3DVIA Composer User Group!

We’re proud to announce that the first ever 3DVIA Composer User Group meeting was an astounding success!

Braving the cold and snow of the Minnesota winter, a broad mix of CAD engineers, engineering managers, and technical writers gathered in Minneapolis to share ideas and become more productive using 3DVIA Composer.

The day’s speaker roster included 3DVIA’s own Tod Cruikshank (the famed creator of the “TodCast”), who presented a collection of tips and tricks for streamlining content creation in 3DVIA Composer. Also speaking were Earl Hasz from SolidWorks and Mat Sauer of MTS Systems Corp.

It’s good to point out that this event was purely focused on sharing information to help make users more productive – and not trying to sell (software, timeshare, used cars, etc). This allowed the attendees to settle in and focus on the most important stuff, namely learning, networking, and sharing experiences.

I’m also happy to report that the good folks over at SolidWorks are helping to expand the 3DVIA Composer User Group network by supporting it inside the SolidWorks User Group Network. This means that if you’re interested in starting up a 3DVIA Composer User Group in your area, you can jump on the SWUGN website and learn how easy it is.  If you’re not a SolidWorks user, rest assured because the user group network is open to ALL users, regardless of what CAD platform you use!

We’ll be sure to keep you informed as the 3DVIA Composer User Groups continue to expand.

TodCast #6: IP Protection and Secure 3D

When ever you share 3D data outside your organization, you put your designs at risk of being reverse engineered and stolen. This makes protecting intellectual property a major concern for manufacturers and product designers. In our next TodCast, Tod shows how easy it is to protect your 3D designs using a few simple (and patented!) tools in 3DVIA Composer.

We have a TON of new videos to share with you. I was about to post our next “3DVIA your iPod” video, and quickly eclipse our 100th video, and the title itself struck me… we’ve been doing this for several years, and when we originally started, this was the era of the video iPod. And the way to get the video on your iPod was through iTunes podcast feed.

A lot has changed in the last few years. We’re in the YouTube era, social era… iPhones and iPads, Android, tablets… it’s easier than ever to share videos. We don’t need iTunes video feeds or any other complicated uploading/downloading procedures and syncing. So while I was hoping to soon mark our 100th video “podcast”, it’s time to get current and refresh the name. Plus, I’d like to introduce you to our producer of these videos: Tod.

With that… I’m happy to announce our NEW video series: The TodCast!

Here’s introducing “TodCast #1: Technical Illustration Standards” where you will learn about how 3DVIA Composer supports S1000D, WebCGM, and ATA iSpec2200. Tell us what you think! (Or, tell Tod what you think!)

TodCast #2: Routing Wires

So you want to route some wires on your 3DVIA Composer animation, but:

(a) you don’t have 3D models of wires, and (b) you don’t have a way to make parts flexible.

So what to do?

In this latest TodCast, Tod shows an interesting way to use geometry primitives + associative paths to simulate wire routings. Enjoy!

For those of us in the northern hemisphere — hot enough for ya? Welcome to the dog days of summer! To help keep you cool, Tod has put together a set of tips and tricks that will turn complicated animations into quick and easy work — getting you out of the hot seat, on your way home, and into your hammock in no time!

Tod shows how powerful yet easy it is to mix up and incorporate some advanced stuff: assembly groups, parent/inherited animations, assembly selection mode, grid snapping, primitives, timeline filtering by selected objects… just to name a few.

Enjoy!

Welcome to the first TodCast of 2012! We have been busy making fresh content for your enlightenment and enjoyment. (Please feel free to tell us what you’d like to see!)

In this TodCast, Tod walks us through the new multi-camera capability of Version6 R2012x, and shows us how easy it is to create engaging animations.

TodCast #29 Use Styles for Consistency

Styles are a very powerful and probably an under-utilized feature that can really help make your Composer experiences more consistent. In one example from the forum, a user was adding spaces to text panels to make them the same size. I see users all the time that will make a new panel and change the color, position and size over and over again and manually   move them around to the same position. When I show them how to do this with styles usually the first comment is “I wish I would have found this a long time ago”

So here you go, today’s Quick Tip – Use Styles for consistency.

Just thought I’d add a little note. If you do want to add spaces and keep them, use the Character map tool for spaces in Windows and create the style with that. Its a great way to save formatted indents.
